Content is still King, and probably always will be. Putting together the text for your site is an important task. If you haven’t had to do that much writing for professional presentation I’ll give you some tips that might help get you started, as well as things to consider while writing the copy.
Drawing a Blank?
[pullquote]IMPORTANT: This doesn’t mean that you can just start copying and pasting your website together! There are copyright rules that prevent you from doing that. So don’t! Just use the other site’s wording as a guideline so you can get started writing your own copy.[/pullquote]
If you’re just getting started and have no idea where to begin, one thing you could do is to look at other sites that offer the same type of products or services that your business provides. Take a look at how they’re presenting they’re information. Make a note of the things that seem most effective to you and you can start to put together your own text based on studying what other successful sites have done.
Some Things To Consider
While your writing the text for our site, keep in mind:
- You don’t have to write a book on every page. Sometimes people think that they should put every detail and piece of information online for people to get a clear picture of what their business is about. In reality, most people don’t care that much about every little detail. In general, people aren’t really interested in reading that much text. Too much text can be a “buzz kill.”
- Focus on just writing the real “Home Run” statements. What you want to do is really to get those bullet points across that really inspire and motivate the visitor to take action – contact you, buy your product or services, sign up for your newsletter, etc…
Hire a Professional
Your website’s message is crucial to it’s success. If your not comfortable taking on the task, you could always hire a copywriter. Unless you are quite the word-smith, hiring a good professional copywriter is a fantastic idea. It’s like hiring a professional web designer, or a professional photographer. The difference is quite measurable and could make the difference in your business’ online image and success.
Anyway, hopefully this has given you enough to think about to get things started and keep you on the right track.
