Google+, while growing a little slower than some may have predicted, now has over 400 million members. Not a bad start.
Still, many are going there to check it out and a little concerned that they don’t know anyone there. Maybe they’ll even setup a profile, but rarely return simply because they don’t have anyone to talk to. All their friends and families are on Facebook, or Twitter.
If that describes your experience, or you have yet to check it out, here is a perspective that might help.
Google+ isn’t another Facebook
Here is an easy way to remember the difference between these two networks:
Facebook is Connection Based
Friends; family; who’s having babies; etc…
Google+ is Interest Based
What’s your interests? I love photography so most of my followers and followees on Google+ are photographers from all over the world. They are other men and women who are as obsessed with photography as I am. They are people who don’t get tired of hearing you talk about photography.
Do I personally know any of them? No, but our conversations flow as if we’ve known each other for years.
In fact, I really only have a couple of people in my Google+ network that I’ve actually met and know it real life. However, I never really see them on there.
What are your interests? What’s your passion? It’s more than likely you’ll find others of your kind on Google+.
Okay, Now for the business aspect of Google+ and why you should be there.
Here are the two reasons I promised:
Number 1: Get your social media efforts indexed faster
If you’re in business, you want to be Google’s best friend. You want to have a great relationship. You want Google to know everything your business is doing; everything it’s about.
If you’re posting for your business on Google’s social network (G+), it’s like you’re delivering your content directly to Google. Google will index your social media activity faster from Google+ than from anywhere else.
Number 2: Get in early
In spite of the over 400 million population of G+, businesses are slow in moving in and setting up shop. Google+ isn’t going anywhere, and it will only get bigger. (an understatement)
Getting in early on a network like this can be very beneficial.
Here’s an example: Remember MySpace? (true story)
A couple of years ago, one of my youngest clients was a 19 year old woman, who designed t-shirts for young ladies. One of the best things she had going for her was a strong social media presence.
This young woman had quickly setup shop on MySpace when that network first started. By the time she was ready to start her business of selling t-shirts and other fashions, she already had over 20,000 followers. All she had to do was post a couple images of anything new she had coming out and she was quickly earning more than most people her age right from her website. That’s the power of social media, and that’s one of the powerful benefits of getting in early on these things.
Check it out!
So have a great weekend, and if you have a little spare time, drop by Google+ and set up your profile. Then set up a page for your business.
